COIL Project Overview
This project is a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) initiative that brings together students, faculty, and partners from Canada and Taiwan to collaboratively design a digital resource for international exchange students.
Project Partners
| Client | Humber Global, represented by Emily Riche |
| Partner Institution | National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT), Taiwan |
| Tourism Consultants | TOUR 3000 – International and Canadian Tourism Taught by Prof. Anke Foller-Carroll |
| Web Developers | BUS 2504 – Web Development Taught by Hanadi Alnawab |
Project Purpose
The client, Humber Global, requires a website designed specifically for international exchange students who are planning to spend one academic semester at Humber. The website will:
- Help incoming exchange students prepare for life and study at Humber
- Introduce students to the city of Toronto and its surrounding region
- Encourage connection and cultural exchange between international and Humber students
At the same time, NKUHT students are developing a parallel website aimed at supporting Humber students who will be studying in Taiwan, creating a reciprocal international learning experience.
Project Roles & Collaboration
TOUR 3000: Tourism Consultants (Fall 2025)
Students in the TOUR 3000 course acted as tourism consultants. Their role was to research, plan, and develop the content for the website, with NKUHT students as the primary target audience (while remaining relevant to all international exchange students).
Their deliverables included a detailed international student target market profile, and a proposed Toronto tourism experience for exchange students spending one semester at Humber that includes:
- Three (3) themed day-by-day itineraries, each representing different seasons and niche interests
- Two (2) excursions outside the city of Toronto
- A video highlighting their recommendations
This content forms the foundation of the Exchange Student Guide website.
BUS 2504: Web Development Team (Winter 2026)
Students in the BUS 2504 Web Development course will complete this COIL project as their final group project. Working in small groups as their Media Agency (established in the first group assignment), students will take on the role of a professional Media Agency hired by Humber Global.
Using content developed by the TOUR 3000 class, each Media Agency will design and build an Exchange Student Guide website for international exchange students preparing for a semester at Humber. Throughout the project, teams will collaborate directly with Humber Global as their client. At the end of the term, students will participate in a Showcase Day, where they present both their Media Agency and the website developed for Humber Global, simulating a real-world client and agency presentation.
